Delay time in milliseconds

A delay pedal or plug-in often asks for milliseconds. This site computes that number from tempo. The formula is milliseconds = (60000 / BPM) × beats. The delay time calculator fills a table for whole through thirty-second notes.

A quarter note is one beat. At 120 BPM, 60000 / 120 is 500, so the straight quarter is 500 ms. A dotted value is the straight time multiplied by 1.5, so the dotted quarter at 120 BPM is 750 ms. A triplet value is the straight time multiplied by 2/3, so the quarter-note triplet is 333.33 ms.

The calculator treats BPM as a quarter-note pulse, the same way the session metronome does in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. In 6/8 the metronome still labels BPM as the dotted-quarter pulse. If you need an eighth-note delay against that 6/8 click, convert first. The table will not invent Infinity for an empty or zero tempo.
